Jason Kidd and his U.S. teammates say they're thrilled for the chance to play for their country.

BEIJING — It’s bigger than Yao Ming.

It’s bigger than the Great Wall.

It’s bigger than all the tea in the Middle Kingdom.

Every one of the participants has played in big games before, but nothing like this.

When the NBA stars Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and Team USA square off against Yao Ming’s Chinese national team on Sunday, the event will create fireworks that could rival the display in the opening ceremony of the Olympics.

“I think close to 3 billion people are gonna be watching that game,” said forward Carmelo Anthony. That’s what they say. That’s what I hear. That’s a lot of people.

“The atmosphere is gonna be crazy. We’re playing against the home team to open up the Olympics and I’m pretty sure it’s gonna be crazy and energetic in there. Everybody in that building is gonna be jumping. It’s the biggest game on the biggest stage in the world.”

The United States enters the Olympic tournament once more as the heavy favorite to win the gold medal, while China will be challenged to advance out of the preliminary round.

So the game is expected to be a rout.

But the basketball-mad host country playing its first game against the global superstars of the NBA, there is speculation that the world-wide television audience for the game (9:15 a.m. Houston time on NBC) could be the largest in Olympic history.

President Bush (the first sitting U.S. president to attend an Olympics in a foreign country) will attend the game along with China’s president Hu Jintao and premier Wen Jiabao.

“I will have to take a breath at the beginning of this game,” said Yao Ming. “It is the start of the first Olympic Games to be played in China. It is the event that my country and I have been looking to for seven years, since Beijing was awarded the Games. I am so happy that I have been able to recover from my (foot) injury to be ready. To play against the USA team will be great challenge and a great honor.”

The cast of veteran NBA stars, all of whom have been in the playoffs is just as thrilled. It’s gonna be exciting,” said 35-year-old Jason Kidd.

“You can take a Game 7 and times it by seven. It’s gonna be something that nobody’s experienced before. I don’t know if anybody’s had a president come to a game to watch them play before.”

A huge grin spread across the face of Carlos Boozer as he anticipated the game.

“I expect the crowd to be amazing, incredible,” he said. “If you can just imagine and try to wrap your minds around the opening tip with Dwight Howard and Yao Ming. As soon as that ball goes up, every camera in the building is gonna be flashing.

“People are saying this is supposed to be the most watched event in basketball history. For us to be a part of that, for our kids, our grandkids, is something that will be something to look back on when we’re older. Honestly, that’s amazing.”

Point guard Chris Paul nodded his head up and down.

“Just thinking about this first game now, you get goosebumps,” he said. “It’s something we’ll be able to tell our kids and our grandkids that we took part in the largest sporting event ever. And, you know, there’s been a lot of sporting events.”

Yao Ming returned to the hardcourt today from a foot injury for 12 minutes against Serbia in the Stankovic Cup, a pre-Olympic tune-up tournament. China won 96-72. Reports said that Yao Ming looked "rusty," but I doubt Reebok really gives a shit how he plays so long as his big ass is out there. The shoe company endorses Yao and this week unveiled the limited edition Yao Ming Omni Pump Hexride 5 in select Chine$e stores.

Reebok is banking on the fug shoe to make inroads to the Chine$e market, something Nike and Adidas already have a headstart on.

"With a huge global event like the Olympics, and with Yao as such a huge figure for the country, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity as we make our ka-ching-chong charge into China," said Todd Krinsky, Reebok's vice president of sports and entertainment marketing.

Only 2008 sneakers were made and they retail for about $130 dollars, or $886 yuan, almost half the average monthly salary of a well-paid Chine$e worker. The shoe is laden with "ancient Chine$e secret" imagery, like the dragon, Yao's Chine$e zodiac sign (the monkey), and the colors red and gold.

Beijing 2008 - Yao Ming set for return

Yao Ming, China's most popular sportsman, will make his return from foot surgery to play for his country against Iran in July's Stankovic Cup, local media has reported.

The 7'6" Houston Rockets center had his NBA season cut short by a fractured foot in February and faced a race to be fit to lead China's challenge for basketball gold at the August 8-24 Beijing Olympics.

"Yao Ming will definitely play the match and this will be his first match after returning from injury," the organiser of the Stankovic Cup told Sohu.com.

As well as China and Asian champions Iran, the Stankovic Cup will also feature European champions Russia and African champions Angola. It will take place in Hangzhou, China, from July 17-20.

Yao's agent said the 27-year-old had been given the all-clear by Rockets medical staff to return to China on June 24 but could not confirm whether he would definitely be fit for the Stankovic Cup.

Giant bed for huge Games auction

The bed used by China's 2.26m (7ft 6in) basketball star [[Yao Ming]] is one of 200 million Olympics memorabilia items for auction online, Chinese media say.

[[Xiong Yan]], president of the China Beijing Equity Exchange, which is handling the sales, said he hoped it would be the biggest Olympics auction.

China Daily said the sales could fetch up to one billion yuan ($145m).

Olympic Village furniture, electronic items, sports equipment and even land will be up for sale.

China Daily said bidding for some items got under way on Wednesday, with the auctions set to take place after the Olympics, which are being held from 8-24 August, and the Paralympics, from 6-17 September.

Fixtures and fittings

"This is not the first time Olympic organisers are auctioning memorabilia," Mr Xiong said.

"But as far as I know, this will be the biggest."

He added: "We will highlight items [like Yao's bed] for bidders. Obviously the bidding will be hot. People will be looking for memorabilia."

China Daily said there would be "furniture and fixtures, timepieces, light bulbs and tubes, and a variety of sports equipment".

Land used for temporary Games sites will also be available.

Yao Ming's bed will be one of the biggest attractions. He plays for the Houston Rockets in the NBA in the US and is a huge star in China.

The stress fracture to the left foot he suffered in February has been a national concern, but he expects to return to light training with China's national team on Friday.

The cost of the Games themselves is estimated at $2.1bn.
