Keep Your Yorkie Healthy

     There is no doubt about it that Yorkies are beautiful creatures who are loving additions to any family. Unfortunately, the breed is prone to bad teeth. It is a well known fact that excess plaque on a Yorkie's teeth can even lead to heart disease and premature death for your pet. So, keeping your Yorkie's teeth brushed and professionally cleaned once per year by your vet is vital to your precious pet's health.
     If your Yorkie loves wet-food (and what dog doesn't?) be sure that s/he also has plenty of crunchy treats or nonslivering rawhide bones to chew on. If s/he will tolerate it, mix some crunchy kibbles into his or her nightly meal. This too can help your Yorkie's teeth stay clean between professional cleanings from the vet.
     You can find a good selection of dental care products at your local pet store. In addition to tooth brushes that fit tiny Yorkie mouths, you can also find small pads that go over the finger and also do a good job keeping the teeth brushed. You will also find chicken or beef flavored toothpaste to make the task a bit more pleasant for your tiny friend. Although you can be sure that your Yorky will hate having its teeth brushed, it will get used to it and will live a longer and happier life as a result! TALK OF THE YORKBy Cindy Adams(recently ran in the New York Post)My Juicy is 4. My Jazzy Jr. is 3. Juicy, a girl, is 31/2 pounds. The boy, my huge, killer attack dog Jazzy, is 41/2 pounds. Trust me, Yorkies leave paw prints on your heart.
Why? What's so great about a Yorkie? A.) They're portable. I mean, try to go shopping and stuff a Rottweiler in the pocket of your Carolina Herrera coat.
B.) They're snugglable. Jazzy is the only male currently sharing my bed, but who needs any other? I put my cold feet on him. He licks my face. And never bothers me next morning with stupid questions like, "So how was it for you?"
C.) They're lovable. They don't tell you when you havea zit on your face or that you've gotten fat. They wait for you to come home every night. They don't nag and ask where you've been.
D.) And Yorkies don't shed. They have hair, not fur, so there is no dander, no problem for people with allergies.
When Joan Rivers lost her adored 19-year-old Spike, she got herself another Yorkie. Amy Tan has two Yorkies. Cupcake Nederlander, daughter of James Nederlander, and Peaches Nederlander, daughter of James Nederlander Jr., have playdates with my Juicy and Jazzy. The Ralph Laurens' Yorkie, Bikini, is the face in their ads. The Yorkie belonging to Katherine Oliver, NYC's commissioner for TV and motion-picture development, is Jazzy's cousin. Norman Sheresky, lawyer for Christy Brinkley's divorcing husband, Peter Cook, has a Yorkie named Biscuit. Biscuit, a product of my breeder, Paula, is a relative of my Juicy.
New York is Yorkie country. Of course, like anything with the name "York," they're tough. A little demanding. I mean, Juicy is 31/2 pounds of pure selfish. She owns nine of my 10 rooms. But she's very New York. She loves The Post. Almost every night, I find her poring over my column.
Do they ever cause difficulties? Yeah, oh yeah! A Yorkie could have the house broken before they are. And they're terriers. We're talking a slight habit of grabbing guys' pants legs - with the guys' legs still in them.
And then there's the bills. Trainers, microchips, coats and sweaters, grooming and hair bows, jeweled collars. Because they're now members of the family, because today America spends $39 billion a year on pets, little creatures with less hair than their mothers have under the armpits are costing fortunes. My two have teeth the size of bugle beads. For a cleaning, including my 15 percent discount, $990. Not that I don't love my vet, Dr. Berman. I do. I do. But it's just that my own human dentist, Dr. Lazare, charges only $175.
Still, I love Jazzy and Juicy so much that in the will I'd leave them my apartment if I thought they could pay the maintenance.

Delta Airlines Loses Yorkshire Terrier

A Chesapeake woman was thrilled to get a new pet, but when the puppy wouldn't eat, the breeder suggested for a short time, she send it back to it's mother. She put it on a flight for Texas. And now the puppy is missing.Airlines frequently misplace luggage, but it usually turns up.How do you lose a dog?!"I've already communicated with the kennel. I've already communicated with the airlines in Atlanta, in Norfolk, in Texas. No one knows where she is. She's completely vanished," said Courtney Johnson.Johnson is terrified of what may have happened to the 3 month old Yorkshire Terrier she named Apple.

She bought the puppy from a breeder known as Kimberli's Kuties, who came highly recommended by several friends. But for two weeks, the playful puppy wouldn't eating properly. Johnson feared Apple needed to be with her mother a little longer and the breeder agreed. So on Saturday afternoon she sent the puppy back to Texas through Delta Cargo."I received a phone call at midnight letting me know she had missed her flight, but that she'd be on a flight first thing in the morning. First thing in the morning, I get a call from the breeder saying she didn't make the flight and they did not know where Apple was," she said.Since then Johnson has spent a lot of time on the phone trying to locate Apple, but to no avail.

"I have been hung up on. I have been told it's not a child, it just a dog. My biggest fear is that they've pushed her somewhere. They've just looked right beyond her and she's now gonethree days and she's not eaten or drunken anything," she said.Johnson says she almost prays that someone stole Apple. At least that way she'd know her puppy was being cared for. But at this point, she can't even get that confirmed. "I've been waiting all my life for this puppy. I've saved my money and I've saved my money and finally, when I was able to afford her and be able to take care of her, she's gone and no one has any answers for me," she said.

Your NewsChannel Three spoke with Delta Airlines spokesperson, Gina Laughlin. She told us Delta airlines deeply regrets what happened and hopes to return the puppy very soon. Laughlin also told us they launched an investigation into what happened. However, Johnson tells me, Delta has not even called.
