Apple To Push Community WiFi?

posted by bhartzer

If municipal WiFi networks can’t get the backing in order to provide wireless blankets over cities, why not leave it up to the residents to create the network instead? They could use systems like FON - especially if they’re backed by someone they know and trust… and the rumor is that the FON peer-to-peer WiFi system has a new friend - Steve Jobs.

Jobs expressed interest in a sit-down with Varsavsky, which eventually took place earlier this month in Jobs’ top-floor office at Apple headquarters in Cupertino.

“He was very interested in FON; the meeting went on for an hour and a half,” said Varsavsky, who described Jobs as appearing “trim” and “fit” in his ripped blue jeans and black hooded sweatshirt. “He’s extremely curious. He asks a lot of questions. He’s not the nicest guy — I mean his questions are inquisit [sic] to say the least. He’s to the point.”

Apple, of course, sells its own brand of AirPort WiFi routers. However, Jobs’s interest in FON may be driven by the prospect of ubiquitous WiFi access for owners of his company’s new iPhone and iPod Touch handhelds.

FON allows users to share their WiFi connection with other FON subscribers.

AppleInsider | Steve Jobs keen on a world where people share WiFi

Laptop Travel Tips by www.AirportWiFiGuide.com

posted by pavarolar
Here are some tips to keep your laptop safe and to avoid problems dealing with Airport Security. There are no other person than you that can keep your laptop safe during your air travel and it is a good ideas to keep these tips in mind.

1. Packing your laptop.

Remember to keep your laptop close to you at all time on your travel. It is highly recommended that you pack your laptop in your carry-on baggage and NEVER! put your laptop in the check baggage. Airport baggage handlers don’t except people to put expensive gadgets in the check baggage, so you can’t expect your check baggage to be treated as a fragile object. You should not store your laptop in the over head bin neither. You don’t want your laptop to be damaged by other travelers’ baggage during the flight.

2. Security Check.

More often than not you will be required to take your laptop out from its carrying case and turn it on for the Airport Security personal. It’s important to remember to keep you laptop battery charged. Remember to turn it on when you are asked and not before, so your laptop won’t get into its sleep mode and cause you more time trying to restarting it.

3. X-Ray or Not X-Ray?

It is okay to put your laptop through the X-Ray machine. The magnetic field generated by the machine is not strong enough to damage your hardware.
The metal detector on the other hand can be harmful to your laptop. It is a good idea to ask the Airport Security personal not to use the metal detector on your laptop during the inspection. Remember you can always request a hand check.

4. Carry your original receipt overseas.

It’s important to remember to carry your original receipt when traveling overseas. When returning to your country of origin will likely be require to show the proof that your laptop was not purchases oversea during your trip and subject to duty. This is also true to all of your electronic belongings. You want to make sure you can prove to the Custom Officer that these gears are what you brought along on your trip.

5. Keep a low profile and always keep your eye on your laptop.
Do keep a low profile with your laptop. Laptop theft is still pretty common place at airports, so it is a good idea to keep the laptop close to you at all time. If you have to use the facilities, take your laptop bag along with you or leave it with someone you know and trust if you have a traveling companion.

6. Locked you laptop case.

Don’t invite people to help themselves with your laptop and other gadgets. Lock for your laptop case is pretty cheap and easy to find. Pack your laptop away and put a lock on it. The little lock can make a big different in deterring theft of your laptop.

7. Getting online at the airport.

If you are planning to do some Internet surfing on your laptop at the airport we recommend checking for Airport WiFi Guide (like the one here on AirportWiFiGuide.com) for airport internet connection availability prior to your travel. AirportWiFiGuide.com keeps the latest information about Internet Connection at major airports around the country.
