Maroon 5 are out with a new remix for their single "If I Never See Your Face Again", taken from the group’s forthcoming effort, "Call and Response: The Remix Album", which is due on 9th December via Octone Records. The rejuvenated track was helmed by Kasseem "Swizz Beatz" Dean, who previously remixed tracks by Ms. Dynamite, Mariah Carey and Alicia Keys.

Other album contributors include Bloodshy & Avant: Christian Karlsson and Pontus Winnberg (Britney Spears, Christina Milian), Mark Ronson (Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen), Christopher "Tricky" Stewart (Usher Raymond, Jazmine Sullivan), Pharrell Williams of The Neptunes (Justin Timberlake, Mary J. Blige), Justin "Just Blaze" Smith (LeToya Luckett, Marsha Ambrosius), DJ Premier (Christina Aguilera, Laura Izibor) and Questlove of The Roots (Dido Armstrong, Nikka Costa).

Ms Essie Jain is a very British artist who has absorbed, and been absorbed by, a love affair with the Transatlantic folk scene. Born in London and now based in New York no less, for someone with such a seemingly exciting life her second album is, all in all, a very sombre and sobering experience. Not in an unpleasant way you understand, just notably morose.

Often Jain’s vocal is magical, its imperfections sometimes charming, sometimes captivating. The quietest moments, such as the beautifully melancholy ‘Eavesdrop’, ‘Please’ and the jazz-inspired ‘Stop’ capture the mournful remnants of the golden age of Billie Holiday (or, at least, what she would have sounded like as a hippy) or a toned-down Beth Gibbons/Alison Goldfrapp ensemble. A gentle use of instrumentation shares a trusted intimacy, the pure and effortless ‘Weight Of Me’ appearing like an old friend restoring life to normal, however briefly, a warm joy that only such familiarity can bring. A traditional blend of piano and strings or simple guitar and occasional horns are akin to a comforting hug blended with the bittersweet feeling of remembrance, even on the more upbeat ‘Here We Go’ or the swaggering ‘Do It’.

This is where Jain’s talent shines through, where her urge for creativity is clear but the songs that are more adventurous, while certainly succeeding in being unusual, are slightly more confused. The once soothing vocals become as shrill as a headmistress’s assembly voice in closing track ‘Goodbye’, while the lyrics leave little to enthuse about in ‘You’ (albeit a love song, perhaps Essie may have come up with something a little more meaningful than, “It doesn’t matter if your dad’s a jerk / your mom too…I’ll have my love for you”). Elsewhere, an apparent attempt to emanate a more experimental approach to song arrangement, ‘The Rights’ puts quirky on the map and ends up sounding like a weird showtune, intriguing and frustratingly unfathomable.

Perhaps that is the point, because as there is much to be immediately enjoyed on this album the need to understand Jain may be greater upon reaching its end, so much so that another listen is imperative (and might I add that much more was gained following each successive listen thereafter). As its title suggests, perhaps these songs are merely stepping stones on a more progressive journey, during which she bravely challenges our conception of modern music. The end chord struck on the piano resounds in the major key, holding further promise for what I hope will be future releases.

The loud jangling of fake coins on a decorated peasant skirt and matching headscarf could herald this artist’s arrival, but she also wears thick eyeliner circa 1980’s Brit-Goth. Needless to say, if ever there were an artist that couldn’t be pigeonholed, it could more than likely be Wendy McNeill of Canada. She swiftly shifts from sexy and sultry-bordering-on-masochistic to a haunting waltz backed by a looped angelic voice that belongs on Goldfrapp’s ‘Utopia’, each cleverly opposing one another but combined to build what is often a kooky and colourful, occasionally macabre masterpiece.

Opening proceedings with a cute music box-esque accordion solo, the sense of peace is not long-lasting as McNeill launches into ‘Stop’, an almost tortuous tale complete with dramatic handclaps and eastern European gypsy rhythms, exciting in a way that the Dresden Dolls first made us sit up and take notice and certainly in a way that makes the listener almost forget that there is a whole album to follow by pressing the repeat button. A song so addictive is followed by a melodic plea to not dwell on the sad parts of life, its staccato “doo doo doo” backing vocals and yearning cello causing a blink of disbelief at how different ‘Building A Castle’ sounds to its predecessor yet so disarmingly complementary.

And so the performance continues, from spookily tantalising sideshow to more lo-fi indie rock, the former particularly mesmerising in its own intricate world, each as theatrical as the next, teasing with its unique cabaret best suited to the only Tim Burton film that he now needs to make. McNeill weaves immense and intense tapestries, each telling their own magnificent story, a highlight being the epic struggle of a relationship between snake and rabbit during ‘The Sand Ssad Story Of Rosa Rabbit’. It sounds barmy, I know; in fact, it pretty much is. Perhaps the best thing about music is such originality. And all this inspired by Dolly Parton and ABBA. Don’t believe it? This has got to be experienced firsthand. I, for one, am now desperate to see this spectacle live.

as you may have noticed, free music friday didn’t happen last week. horror of horrors! worry not, it will return at the usual time this week. free music sunday is just as good though, right?

‘Got The Hunger?’

Soul singer Alice Russell found her new album at the end of a rainbow. OK, not really, but it is called Pot Of Gold. Fnarr. Billed as “a rare, bold and adventurous undertaking”, Alice’s fourth solo opus follows hot on the heels of her brilliant Mr Scruff collaboration ‘Music Takes Me Up’ and finds her raring to snatch the crown of British soul from the likes of Adele and Duffy – she can, after all, belt out a tune better than either. Her voice is that big. Pot Of Gold is once again produced by longtime collaborator TM Juke and matches Alice’s gargantuan voice with a hulking great horn section and huge swells of layered strings to beef up the soulful ’60s pop arrangements and accents of funk.

Today’s free song is something of a resumé for the whole album. Blissfully soulful harmonies; check! A defiant call-and-response breakdown; check! Crisp drums and handclaps; check! A meeean bassline; check! A full on funk workout; check! It’s actually quite exhausting on first listen but it doesn’t take long to get into the swing of things and you know you’re onto a good thing when your legs start bouncing involuntarily.
