one hour of no power: kinda like that scene in 'The Day The Earth Stood Still' but not as scary 11MAY2007

i will be in the skies -over a vast ocean- riddled with guilt, so i ask that you consider taking my place in what is described in the following...

everyone concerned about the effects of climate change will turn everything off for an hour on Sunday, July 1st. this means one hour with no cars, mobile phones, televisions, household appliances, no heat for that inhumanly frigid garden level apartment... the world will be unplugged for an hour.

One Hour No Power is an event to raise awareness of our collective ability to tackle climate change through our everyday lives... it is up to you how you spend the hour. as i said, i'll be in the sky over a vast ocean -sitting in an economy class seat with about 200 strangers... while we eat prefab omlettes, read the inflight magazine and doze-off while re-watching 'Music And Lyrics' we will be giving purpose to One Hour No Power by emitting over a ton of CO2.

i'll plan to take the 2nd off as a day off no power (sleeping off the jet lag) and i'll do my Al Gore best (see www.climatecrisis.net for a start) to research the best way to counter the effects of my kerosene-fueled air travel . if you aren't flying over vast oceans on July 1st, try switching-off for an hour.

last week the Owl Commander sent this message: pack your bags and let's go!!! attached to this message was an article published by The Australian entitled 'First "Habitable" Alternative To Earth Found'. the report detailed the discovery of an Earth-like planet detected in the nearby (20.5 light years away) Goldilocks Zone.

i'm always game for a little relocation therapy, but a 21 year journey at the speed of light is a bit more than i can muster... even with a hearty supply of Yorkie Bars. the Owl Commander's message did make me nostalgic for those evenings long ago when my parents let me stay up late to watch Carl Sagan introduce me to the wonders of the universe in the PBS series Cosmos. i can still remember Sagan in a Cambridge dining room cutting an apple pie while clad in a corduroy jacket and turtle neck.

oh! the good ol' days. remember them? you know, when our biggest problem was trying to justify string theory with the cosmic singularity (back in the day when the idea of parallel universes was scoffed at). now we have M theory, multiverses and the hope that somewhere in an alternative universe Keira Knightly comes to me nightly...

there is a lot of work piled up on my desk, but tomorrow i will take time out to see the openning of 28 Weeks Later, the sequel to the Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later. i still remember seeing the original with jonny turbo... we watched the entire film on the edge of our seats somewhere on the left side of a packed Chicago theatre.

earlier today -oddly enough- jonny turbo sent a trailer to me for the film Black Sheep which featured recently at this year's Tribeca Film Festival. blood thirsty sheep going for the jugular! from the look of the trailer it seems a bit like 28 Days Later... but with sheep. not too sure if i'm supposed to laugh, join PETA or lunge for the mint jelly.
