Dinara Safina faces a desperate Australian Open fitness battle after suffering a crippling back injury at the WTA Championships which also forced her to tearfully surrender her world number one ranking. The 23-year-old Russian, who said she had been plagued by inflammation in her lower back for over three months, lasted just two games and 13 minutes in her tournament opener against Jelena Jankovic on Wednesday. Russia's Dinara Safina hobbled out of the WTA Championships here on Wednesday, surrendering the year-end world number one ranking to Serena Williams in the process. DOHA (Reuters) - Serena Williams became the first player through to the semi-finals of the WTA Championships with a 6-2 6-4 win over Russia's Elena Dementieva on Thursday. The American, who was confirmed as the year-end world number No.1 on Wednesday when her closest rival for the honor Dinara Safina of Russia withdrew injured, made a slow start before overpowering an opponent who served 10 double faults.
