(Getty Images)more pics »There was a glaring omission during the "In Memoriam" segment of the 2013 Oscars on Sunday. Lupe Ontiveros, who died of liver cancer in July, was not among the honorees featured during the telecast, nor was she mentioned in the Academy's "In Memoriam" online gallery, which includes 114 names that weren't mentioned during the show. Ugh.
Some might argue that Ontiveros was best known for her work on television, thanks to her role on Desperate Housewives; She was indeed featured during the "In Memoriam" segment of the Emmy Awards. But in her 35-year career, she stole scenes in countless movies, including The Goonies, Clueless, and As Good As It Gets. She also portrayed the murderous Yolanda Saldivar in Selena, the film that made Jennifer Lopez a star.
Some critics have suggested that Ontiveros was omitted on purpose as punishment for having addressed racism in Hollywood.
Ontiveros, who estimated that she'd played a maid over 300 times, told CNN in 2009 that it was frustrating being typecast as a housekeeper. "You're pigeonholed, stereotyped. That means we don't like you. We forget that this country was founded by immigrants," she said.
