Kelly Clarkson's Emotional 'American Idol' Performance Brought Everyone to Tears, Including Herself
Kelly was so good that she even made herself cry.
You know you're a really good singer when you move yourself to tears.
That's exactly what Kelly Clarkson did last night on American Idol. After serving as a guest judge for Thursday's episode, the first American Idol winner returned to the stage to perform the heartfelt song “Piece by Piece.” The track discusses Clarkson's experience of being abandoned by her father when she was only six years old. The talented singer was inspired to write the song during her first pregnancy, and in the lyrics Clarkson describes what a good father her own husband is.
During the near end of her performance, Clarkson was so overwhelmed by her emotions that she started crying. Ever the professional, the pop star took a moment to compose herself before belting out the rest of her touching tune. Clarkson received a standing ovation from the audience and the judges (Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez, and Harry Connick, Jr.). In fact, Urban was crying during most of her performance.
When Ryan Seacrest joined her on stage, Clarkson explained why she was driven to tears. “I’m pregnant, and it’s nostalgic, and I can’t believe it’s the last season,” she said. “It’s just a touching song for me because I wrote it about my little girl when I was pregnant, and now I’m pregnant with my little boy.”
