This year, she entered with lowered expectations, but was still vanquished by a lower-ranked player.

This time around, it was was 52-ranked Kateryna Bondarenko of the Ukraine, who bested the Serbian in a three-set match, winning 2-6, 6-3, 7-6. While Ivanovic put on a good show at Flushing Meadows, Bondarenko seemed to be deeply into her own game, shaking off a last-minute double fault and letting Ivanovic defeat herself, slapping a forehand shot into the net to end the match.

Since tearing her thigh muscle, Ivanovic has seemed unable to regain the height of play she once held, failing to advance past the fourth round of any of the four majors this year. Indeed, Ivanovic has failed to win a regular title on this year's tour.
