Steven Moffat Discusses Old Man 'Sherlock' and a Possible Season 5
Yes, we are still suffering from some serious Sherlock and John withdrawals.
For the love of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, we need this show back in our lives!
Everyone’s favorite high-functioning sociopath has been gone for far too long. As if Season 4 wasn’t devastating enough, the show’s fans have now been thrust into limbo about its possible return. Sherlock showrunner Steven Moffat recently talked about the uncertain future of the hit series and whether it’ll get a Season 5 any time soon.
According to Moffat, “everyone is busy” which means that viewers shouldn’t expect any new Sherlock for quite some time. However, the future of the show isn’t bleak. What it really requires from the audience is some patience.
“I vaguely assume we will do it again at some point. I don’t think it will be very soon. It’s due a longer gap,” Moffat revealed. “It is still enormously successful, so there will always be a demand for it, I hope. And there is no upper limit on how long we can do it. Holmes and Watson can be 60 or 70.”
Yup, that means we could get old man Sherlock and old man John down the line! It definitely makes sense, given that the characters were portrayed as a bit older in the original stories anyway. Unfortunately, that means we have to wait for the stars of the show — Benedict Cumberbatch (a.k.a. the hottest combination of an alien and a glass of milk) and Martin Freeman (a.k.a the only man to ever make a hobbit look sexy) — to get much older.
Since Cumberbatch is only 41 and Freeman is 46, this is going to be an achingly slow waiting period! Guess all of us Holmesians will just have to pick up a new hobby to keep our waterworks in check.
Moffat has been preoccupied with finishing up his legendary stint as the head writer of Doctor Who. Perhaps, after a much-needed break, he’ll return to the beloved bromance of Sherlock and John. We’ll be waiting in anticipation until then.
