Fall From Grace: Examining the Career Highs and Lows of the New Stars of 'Sharknado 2'
(SyFy)The Internet's favorite movie of 2013 is getting the sequel treatment. Production on Sharknado 2 begins next week, and it's clear SyFy has parlayed the Sharknado 1 hype into some extra star power to join fellow thespians Ian Ziering and Tara Reid in the battle man vs. shark storm.
Obviously, a SyFy original movie with a portmanteau title — even one as great as Sharknado — is generally not the stepping stone to A-list territory. SyFy usually catches actors on their way down, and judging the new additions to the Sharknado 2 cast, the network's keeping that tradition. Let's take a look at the new castmembers and see how far they've fallen.
Mark McGrathMcGrath will play Fin's brother-in-law. (Yes, the protagonist of Sharknado (Ziering) is named Fin.)
Career High: Before the world knew him as Mark McGrath, we knew him as Sugar Ray. While he was eventually able to escape the same fate as Hootie thanks to some hosting gigs, McGrath has yet to replicate his "Fly" status.
Career Low: The second line of his IMDb profile reads, "He is an actor known for "Hooters 2012 International Swimsuit Pageant," so yeah.
Vivica A. FoxFox will play Fin's old high school friend, Skye.
Career High: Thanks to Kill Bill Vol. 1 and a great run on Curb Your Enthusiasm, Vivica A. Fox experienced a welcome resurgence after a decade of doing stuff like Trapped: Haitian Nights, Boat Trip, and Juwanna Man. But nothing has topped her 1996. Next to Will Smith, she was the biggest winner of Independence Day (other than movie fans, of course).
Career Low: It's got to be the 2003 straight-to-DVD movie Ride or Die, which has the tagline: "The music biz owns you from the label 2 the grave!"
Andy DickDick will play the ambiguous role of "Police Officer."
Career High: You could make a case for the wonky-eyed sex instructor in Old School, but really it's his time on NewsRadio, a sadly underrated staple of NBC's "must see TV" heyday, that serves as Andy Dick's highest highlight.
Career Low: Definitely a stint at Dr. Drew's Sober House and an episode of Celebrity Wife Swap.
Kelly OsbourneOsbourne will play a flight attendant.
Career High: Kelly Osbourne now makes a living making fun of other peoples' clothes, but she would have never landed the gig if it weren't for MTV realizing her famous father would make for a good (for one season) reality show.
Career Low: Osbourne's career moves have pretty much been lateral ones, save for a movie called Live Freaky Die Freaky.
Judd HirschFellow Independence Day alum Hirsch will play a taxi driver because of course.
Career High: The number one thing on Judd Hirsch's career retrospective is and will always be Taxi. (Kids, Taxi was a beloved '70s sitcom about a taxicab company and starred such greats as Christopher Lloyd, Danny DeVito, Tony Danza, and the incomparable Andy Kaufman.)
Career Low: Probably Sharknado 2
