4 Theories About the Upcoming Flashbacks on ‘Game of Thrones’
(HBO)

After months of speculation, producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have finally confirmed that, yes, Season 5 of Game of Thrones will include flashbacks. The revelation was not without some chagrin, as the hit HBO show has purposefully shied away from flashbacks since day one. "Making the first season, we set a rule: No prophecies, dreams, or flashbacks," they told reporters in Spain. "We already failed the first two, and this season we broke the third."

We're not going to lie — we kind of enjoy Game of Thrones' current method of revealing hefty exposition, especially when it involves Tyrion getting drunk and delivering Emmy-worthy monologues. But even we have to admit some things have to be seen to be believed. With that in mind, we take a look at four flashback theories.

Theory #1: Bran learns how to see into the past.
We know Hodor won't be appearing in Season 5, but we do know Bran will be. What's a Bran without his Hodor? Not a very mobile one. But that might not matter since the most mystical Stark's hanging with the three-eyed raven now. One popular theory surmises that the three-eyed raven will teach Bran to observe crucial past events, maybe by detaching form his body and from time and possibly with the help of heart trees.

Still not a good enough reason to exclude Hodor, though.

Theory #2: Cersei has a whole lot of time to reflect on her younger days.
Without giving away too much for non-book readers, Cersei's about to have her toughest season yet. The Internet has been abuzz with one particular scene set in the streets of King's Landing, but we're also anticipating some down time for the fiery Lannister. Maybe these moments of rare reflection will facilitate a flashback? Casting for a Young Cersei (and Maggy the Frog) has allegedly leaked online, making rumors of Charles Dance's return even more plausible.

Theory #3: Daenerys studies up on her Targaryen history.
Remember when Jorah gave Dany history books as a wedding gift? We're not saying the Mother of Dragons is ignorant about her family's volatile past, but she could probably brush up on chapters featuring Aerys II Targaryen, aka the Mad King. Much of Westeros' history is tied up in Aerys' reign — Robert Baratheon's rebellion, the murder of Ned Stark's father and brother, the mystery of Jon Snow's parents, etc. — and we'd like to see some of it, please. If this involves a cliche scene with Dany staring out a window, so be it.

Theory #4: Sean Bean really wanted to return and not get killed.
Bean's made no secret of his desire to step back into Ned Stark's boots, and there's no way that's happening without a flashback. As touched upon above, Ned played a crucial part during Robert's Rebellion, and on top of that, he's one of the only characters who knew the truth about Jon Snow's parents. Tell us all your secrets, Ned!
