Britney Spears' 2016 VMAs Performance Was Maybe Not the Awards Show Comeback We've Been Looking Forward to

Aww, man.

Here's the deal: We love love love Britney Spears. She's the Princess of Pop, and "Toxic" is the road trip jam of forever, but her performance at the 2016 MTV VMAs wasn't the big awards show comeback everyone was hoping for.

After the "Make Me" singer's infamously lackluster performance at the 2007 VMAs, fans had high hopes for this year. Coming just days after her ninth album Glory's release, it's not like the morale wasn't there...so why wasn't the spirit?

While on stage, Spears performed "Make Me" alongside rapper G-Eazy, who seemed to have been the star of the show.

On Britney's part, the energy we used to live for just wasn't present.

A special shout-out to Carlos, who kept it both real and positive.

It's cool though, Brit Brit. You'll always be the best in our hearts.
