Everyone In 'Better Caul Saul' Wants A Walter And Jesse Reunion, And I’ll Cry If It Happens
'Breaking Bad' creator Vince Gilligan said it's finally time for Walter and Jesse cameos on the spinoff.
When Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan debuted the spinoff series Better Call Saul, I honestly wasn't sure if I could watch it. I'd formed such a deep (and weirdly emotional connection) to Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul's characters — Walter White and Jesse Pinkman, respectively — that I didn't want to venture back into Albuquerque, New Mexico without them. While there have always been whispers of a Walter and Jesse cameo on Better Call Saul, which takes place before the events of Breaking Bad, it hasn't happened yet. However, during a recent 10-year-reunion Breaking Bad interview with Entertainment Weekly, Cranston and Paul said they'd be happy to make quick cameos on the show — as in, their characters might show up at a gas station or casually cross paths with Saul Goodman.
"[Vince] takes such meticulous care of his characters and the story, and he changed our lives. 'Yes' is the answer," Cranston told the mag. "Even if it’s just a brush-by. A quick little something. We’ve come to know people who we’ve seen before but we don’t know that we’ve seen them before, because we were in the store and we just passed by them. Or we might even have a word or two. 'Oh no, please go ahead. Thank you for holding the door.' And then five years later, you would never remember that. So something as minuscule as that could be very interesting in the fabric of the whole thing. We have those kind of encounters every day, and I think that would be fun for the audience — and the most honest."
Paul said he wants to avoid a gimmicky return, but will go with whatever Gilligan thinks is best.
"My attitude towards it is the same I had from when Better Call Saul first started," Paul shared. "If Vince decided to put Jesse in Better Call Saul, it’s going to be for a reason, and that reason’s going to be very satisfying for me. I trust in Vince. I don’t think he would just do that to satisfy the fans. It would have a purpose, and whether or not he decides to find that purpose or searches for the purpose, I don’t know. But if he does find that purpose, I’m happy to jump on board."
Speaking as a fan, I would be happy with any appearance from my TV faves. Walter and Jesse could literally stand next to each other at the grocery store and I'd be happy. But Gilligan dropped a serious bomb when he said it's time for a real arc for my beloved lab runners.
"I desperately want to see both of them on Better Call Saul," Gilligan told EW. "Peter wants it, the writers do, the actors do."
*waves hands in the air*
Gilligan said that since Saul is heading into its fourth season, he doesn't want an easter egg-style cameo. He wants real parts for the two actors.
"[I]t wouldn’t feel as satisfying if it was just a cameo or an Alfred Hitchcock walkthrough," he said. "I think we’ve waited long enough. We damn well better have a good reason for them to show up. I just hope we figure it out because I’ve got to hear, 'Yeah, bitch!' one more time."
I will totally start watching Better Call Saul if Walter and Jesse show up.
Then I'll cry for a hundred years and binge-watch Breaking Bad all over again.
