Kim Kardashian's Openness About Surrogacy Helps Erase The Stigma

The Kardashian-West family is expanding yet again! Kim and Kanye are expecting baby no. 4 via surrogate.

North, Saint, and Chicago are going to have another playmate! According to US Weekly, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are expecting baby no. 4 via surrogate, and this time around, they're having a boy!

The new Kardashian-West baby is the couple's second child via surrogate. He's expected to arrive in "very early May." Chicago West, who is now 11 months old, was the first. She was born via gestational surrogate on January 15, 2018.

Kardashian's choice to make her surrogacy experience public has helped ease the stigma of the practice. A lot of people have started to view surrogacy more positively in recent years, but there are still places in the world that outlaw surrogacy altogether, and some people consider it unethical. An ongoing discussion about it can help such people understand what it is, what it entails, and why it's so important.

Kardashian has always been open about her difficulties with pregnancy. The complications of North and Saint's births were well-documented on the family's reality show, and her doctors have warned her about natural births. Carrying another baby is potentially life-threatening for the reality star, as she's susceptible to placenta accreta, a condition in which the placenta buries itself too deep into the uterine wall. It makes labor and delivery tremendously difficult.

After Saint, Kardashian opted to use gestational surrogacy to grow her family, but some consider that "the easy way out." They couldn't be any more wrong, of course. In an interview with ET in November 2017, the star divulged that the experience was actually much harder than she expected.

"You know, it is really different. Anyone that says or thinks it is just the easy way out is just completely wrong. I think it is so much harder to go through it this way because you are not really in control," she shared. "And, you know, obviously you pick someone that you completely trust and that you have a good bond and relationship with, but it is still ... knowing that I was able to carry my first two babies and not, you know, my baby now, it's hard for me. So, it's definitely a harder experience than I anticipated just in the control area."

Although she didn't enjoy pregnancy, she struggles with the idea that someone else is carrying her child.

"I thought this was going to be so easy, but you know, even in how much I hated it, if I could do it myself I would have preferred that," she said. "So, that inner struggle is kind of hard, but I am just rolling with it, and it is what it is."

Still, Kim feels grateful to have the opportunity to do it. Days after Chicago was born, she took to her website to express how thankful she was to have a child through alternative means.

“I’m so grateful for modern technology and that this is even possible. It’s not for everyone, but I absolutely love my gestational carrier, and this was the best experience I’ve ever had," she wrote. "Our gestational carrier gave us the greatest gift one could give. The connection with our baby came instantly, and it’s as if she was with us the whole time."

Publicly disclosing that you had a child via surrogacy is one thing. Opening up about the ins and outs of the whole process is another. It's increasingly important that public figures like Kardashian are vocal about their experiences. It's up to moms how they want to raise their families — not their critics.
