Despite Massive Support, Idris Elba Confirms He Won't Be Our Next James Bond

Well, we guess that's that.

Despite Massive Support, Idris Elba Confirms He Won't Be Our Next James Bond

Idris Elba has quashed any hopes he'd be our next 007.

While promoting his directorial debut Yardie, Elba was asked by a Good Morning Britain correspondent if she was looking at the next Bond. Elba quickly responded, "No."

With that, the 45-year-old British actor shut down the long-standing speculation he'd be our next Bond. Elba has been the frequent subject of Bond rumors going back almost a decade. In 2011, he told NPR he didn't "want to be the black James Bond."

"Sean Connery wasn’t the Scottish James Bond, and Daniel Craig wasn’t the blue-eyed James Bond, so if I played him, I don’t want to be called the black James Bond," said Elba at the time.

A few years later, following the Sony Pictures leak which revealed Elba's name was in contention for the spy role, the actor said he'd "absolutely" take the part, "if it was offered to me."

Earlier this month, Elba added fuel to the rumor when he posted this cheeky little tweet:

He quickly followed it up, telling his 2.5 million Twitter followers to not "believe the HYPE."

Stop playing with our emotions like this, Idris!

In other Bond-related news, Danny Boyle, who was set to direct Bond 25, is no longer attached to the spy franchise due to "creative differences." The still-untitled film due out in late 2019 will once again star Daniel Craig, who has played 007 in a total of four Bond films so far.

So, who is in the running to play the famed spy next? Glad you asked.

Now that Elba is out, the two main contenders seem to be Henry Cavill, who is fresh off his Mission: Impossible – Fallout success, and Outlander's Sam Heughan, a fan-favorite, and native Scotsman. Both actors are a bit on the young side to play 007, but, hell, maybe we'll get a Bond prequel next time around?

You can watch Elba shut down those Bond rumors once and for all below.

Who do you want to see play 007?

Give me a good historical drama, and I'm a happy girl. Helen Mirren stan.
