The First 'Deadpool' Trailer Got a Standing Ovation and an Encore at Comic-Con
And other highlights from the Comic-Con panel.
Holy chimichangas! On a day that featured the latest footage from Suicide Squad, Batman v Superman, and X-Men: Apocalypse, it was the profane comedy of Deadpool that got the biggest reaction in Hall H on Saturday. Co-stars Ryan Reynolds and T.J. Miller and host Chris Hardwick got the lion's share of the laughs as they talked about making the film and what fans could expect from the R-rated Marvel adaptation.
1. First Off, This Panel Had a LOT of F-Bombs
Fair warning, the Deadpool panelists were just as R-rated as the movie. And we're just going to start quoting them verbatim, so if you're offended by F-bombs, now's a good time to stop reading.
Ryan Reynolds abandoned all pretense of playing by the rules early on. "To audience members under 18, I say to you: 'You're gonna fuckin' love this movie.'" He also added: "No matter what the rating is, babies will love this."
2. Everyone Had a Very Good Time Making the Movie
According to director Tim Miller he wouldn't have been able to keep Ryan Reynolds and T.J. Miller under control even if he'd tried. The two of them fed off each other's energy, just like on the panel. Tim Miller said it was actually the ideal scenario for his first directing gig because it felt like the pressure was gone.
3. The Best Superhero Name Ever
Brianna Hildebrand plays a young superhero in training and as Deadpool says in the footage that was shown, her name, Negasonic Teenage Warhead, is "cool as shit!" Brianna said she was very excited to be working alongside Ryan Reynolds, a guy whose picture she'd once photoshopped so it looked like they were hanging out together. She showed it to Reynolds on the set, and he was impressed.
"I guess I was her Joey Lawrence!" he quipped.
4. A Standing Ovation and an Encore for the New Footage
Fans in Hall H were treated to the first finished footage from Deadpool, and it turned out to be the highlight of the jam-packed day. It's violent, profane, and hilarious, and it also revealed X-Men hero Colossus throwing a hulking steel arm into Deadpool. The other big reveal showed Deadpool's face under his mask, and it ain't pretty. As T.J. Miller quips in the movie, "You look like an avocado had sex with an older avocado."
The footage immediately received a huge standing ovation and chants of "One more time!" Chris Hardwick obliged, getting the video played again to a second standing ovation. If there was any doubt about Deadpool not embracing its comic book style, this footage definitely alleviated it.
