Scorr had been working diligently for NPR up until the weeks before his death, having given his last broadcast on July 10. He was known as a defender of free speech and a critic of the mainstream media (he resigned from CBS because he disapproved of their stance leaking illegal government activities).

During his career, Scorr won three Emmy Awards for news reporting. He was also a frequent critic of President Richard Nixon.
