Kristen Bell Proposes to Dax Shepard Now That the Gay Marriage Ban Is No More

Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard are clearly committed to each other: They've been together since 2007 without even a hint of public discord, engaged since 2010, and just last March the two welcomed their first child into the family. But it's only now that Bell is proposing marriage:So why wait until today to start talking about getting hitched? Because today marks the Supreme Court ruling that has struck down DOMA and California's Prop 8 gay marriage ban, allowing same-sex couples the right to marry and enjoy the same federal benefits afforded heterosexual couples.

Bell and Shepard made it clear they were only going to marry when their gay friends could do the same. "The reason we’re not rushing to get married is because I don’t feel appropriate taking advantage of a right that’s denied to my best friends," said Bell in a 2012 interview with The Advocate. “Dax and I have talked about it a lot, and this issue is very important to both of us. We’re just standing up for what we believe in. Period.”

Congrats to Kristen and Dax, but more importantly congrats to all the people who have been fighting for marriage equality. Supreme Court FTW!
