Shonda Rhimes Dismisses Petition to Fire Jesse Williams from 'Grey's Anatomy'
The haters can keep hating because Dr. Jackson Avery isn't going anywhere!
The Internet is full of trolls, and sometimes those trolls sink even deeper than you can imagine.
Thankfully, Shonda Rhimes doesn't have time for any of them. After learning about the online petition urging ABC to fire Jesse Williams (a.k.a Dr. Jackson Avery) from Grey's Anatomy, Rhimes clapped back at all the haters in top form. The petition was started by a Grey's Anatomy fan who was offended by Williams' BET Awards speech and claimed that it was “racist” against white people.
In reality, Williams' moving words were anything but that. The politically-outspoken actor addressed pertinent issues like police brutality, gentrification, and cultural appropriation in his speech, and he encouraged a call to action. However, some people clearly missed the point since the online petition currently has over 8500 signatures.
The Change.org petition states: “Jesse Williams spewed a racist, hate speech against law enforcement and white people at the BET awards. If this was a white person making the same speech about an African American, they would have been fired and globally chastised, as they should be, but there has been no consequences to Williams' actions. There's been no companies making a stand against his racist remarks and no swift action condemning his negative attitude. Why was Burke's character fired from Grey's Anatomy after his inappropriate homophobic slur, but nothing for Jesse Williams? Why the one-way street? Why the support for a hater? Why the hypocrisy? #AllLivesMatter All humans bleed the same color. #EqualConsequences4RacistBehavior”
Rhimes took to Twitter to address the issue head on.
Clearly, Williams is not going to be fired from Grey's Anatomy, and Rhimes even celebrated his moving BET Awards speech.
