Jimmy Kimmel is used to making jokes, but on Monday night the late-night host got serious about his newborn son's recent heart surgery.

Kimmel and his wife, co-head writer Molly McNearney, welcomed their second child together, William “Billy” Kimmel, on April 21. At three days old, the little one had to have open heart surgery at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles after nurses and doctors discovered that his heart wasn't working properly.

“I try not to get emotional, but it was a scary story,” a tearful Kimmel revealed during his opening monologue. “But before I go into it, I want you to know that it has a happy ending.”

Little Billy is now home with his family, which includes two-year-old big sister Jane. According to Kimmel, he will have to have another surgery in three to six months, and then another procedure sometime later in life, but the prognosis is good.

Kimmel has understandably opted to take more paternity leave after the scare, and so some of his famous friends will be filling in as guest hosts this week. Anthony Anderson is set to host on Wednesday, while Kristen Bell and David Spade will helm the show on Thursday and Friday, respectively.
