(Warner Bros.)Inherent Vice, director P.T. Anderson's follow-up to The Master, is dropping right in the thick of awards season this year with a December limited release, and we have every reason to suspect it'll change the Oscar Race. After much speculation we've finally got our first look at the movie with this trailer. Based on what we're seeing it looks like the movie will be staying pretty true to Thomas Pynchon's hippie-noir detective story. According to Josh Brolin, the famously reclusive Pynchon even has a cameo in the movie. But good luck spotting him since there are basically only three pictures of Pynchon in circulation, and they're all very old.
As in the book, the lead character, Doc (Joaquin Phoenix), has a definite Big Lebowski vibe to him. And with Anderson directing, we can almost guarantee there will be several very quotable moments in the movie. Add that to the talent-packed cast and a period setting and Inherent Vice seems to be occupying the same space as American Hustle did during last year's run-up to the Oscars.
