Joe Paterno (Getty Images) Joe Paterno was diagnosed with lung cancer about a week ago and the information was made public Friday, adding another layer to the already complicated story of the former Penn State coach who was fired in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky sexual abuse scandal."He is currently undergoing treatment, and his doctors are optimistic that he will make a full recovery," Joe's son Scott Paterno said in a statement (via CNN). "As everyone can appreciate, this is a deeply personal matter for my parents, and we simply ask that his privacy be respected as he proceeds with treatment."
Apparently the cancer was detected when Paterno went for a follow-up visit to the doctor due to a bronchial illness. The cancer is reportedly treatable and though Scott says "the big, main focus" of the last week or so has been his father's health, he reminds the public to "make sure we keep focus on the victims of this whole tragedy."See more Joe Paterno pics here:
