Could John Mayer, one of the most prolific, controversial Tweeters this side of Tinseltown, really shut down his Twitter page forever? Well, looks like it! His page disappeared yesterday, and he left fans with this message (via E! Online): "What does this button do?"

And, just like that (and only about a year too late), he was gone.

The, uh, verbose tweeter left about 3.1 million followers in the dark -- though his Tumblr and Facebook accounts seem to be intact. We're guessing this isn't the last we'll hear from the oversharing singer...maybe he just wanted more room for his rants?

He's had a beef with the microblogging site for a while now, calling it "inherently silly" and "inherently dumb" last year. Then he said just a few months ago that Twitter's demise was on the horizon.

Today he confirmed that he's done with Twitter for good. His camp reported: "With the Battle Studies Tour now at a close and a return to the studio planned, John has discontinued his Twitter account. However, he continues to communicate with his fans via his blog as he always has."

It's been quite a week for Twitter quitters: Demi Lovato yanked her account last week, as did Amanda Bynes.
