Kevin Ryan -- Dies while trying to help motorist

Kevin Ryan, a 44 year old New Yorker, fell to his death while attempting to be a good samaritan. After seeing an overturned vehicle on a bridge in Catskill, New York, he stopped to investigate the accident, but accidentally fell through a 17-foot gap in the bridge.

Lohud reports:

CATSKILL, N.Y. - A Yonkers man and former Mount Kisco resident who fell to his death from a bridge last night after running to help a motorist in an overturned car was remembered today as an outdoorsman who would always help someone in need.

Kevin E. Ryan, 44, was driving home from his cabin in the Catskills with his girlfriend shortly before 11 p.m. yesterday when he put on the brakes over a bridge to help a motorist in an overturned car on the other side of the highway, state police said.

The eastbound and westbound sections of the bridge were separated by a 17-foot gap that Ryan did not see as he rushed over a concrete divider.

Ryan fell 50 feet onto the rocks of the Catskill Creek, police said.

"Being a nice guy he saw what happened and tried to do what he had to do to help and didn't realize it," said Michael Ross, superintendent of Ridgecrest Gardens co-ops on Carpenter Avenue in Mount Kisco, where Ryan lived until he moved to Yonkers with his girlfriend five years ago. "It was just one of those things."

Ryan was a former volunteer with the Mount Kisco Fire Department who loved to hunt and fish, Ross added.

Ryan was driving on Route 23 in the town of Catskill, 30 miles south of Albany, when he stopped over the bridge to help the motorist.

He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Hola! Before coming to Zimbio I wrote for a bunch of print magazines. Now I'm stoked to learn the art of the online magazine.
