One Direction Splits into Four Solo Directions

The boy band is taking an extended hiatus.

One Direction Takes an Extended Hiatus

Say it ain't so! One Direction is officially going on an extended hiatus starting in March of 2016. The group, which now consist of Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, and Niall Horan, is looking forward to focusing on solo projects.

The break will begin after the release of their already completed fifth album, although its release date has not been announced. As of now, the boys will not be touring for promotional purposes. This is the band's first studio album without Zayn Malik, who left the band in March. (Malik signed with RCA Records and will drop his own solo album soon.)

Don't think this is the end of 1D, though. A source tells US Weekly, “Even when Zayn was in the band they had been speaking about having time to focus on personal projects. They're one of the hardest working groups around and totally deserve some time to themselves.”

The Sun reports that Styles is interested in both music and acting opportunities, while Payne is looking forward to songwriting and DJing. Tomlinson, who is expecting a baby with Briana Jungwirth, is working on a reality TV series called Be in a Band, and Horan is also pursuing his own solo endeavors.

In the past five years, the boys have produced five albums and gone on five world tours. Still, the news of an extended hiatus was shocking to many fans.

1D recently released the music video for “Drag Me Down.” The new single highlights the group's more mature sound. Check it out below.
