Happy Holidays to All! 'A Christmas Story Live' Will Include a Hanukkah Number
Fox's live musical take on the Christmas classic is a little more inclusive.
Whip out your leg lamps, because Fox is bringing a true holiday classic to the small screen with A Christmas Story Live! Starring Maya Rudolph, Matthew Broderick, Jane Krakowski, and Ana Gasteyer, the ambitious three-hour live musical will include a few original songs fans didn't see in the 1983 film — including one for Hanukkah celebrators.
The song, "Market for a Miracle," will be performed by Gasteyer, who plays Mrs. Schwartz, the mother of one of Ralphie's friends. As a matter of fact, "Market for a Miracle" is what convinced Gasteyer to get involved.
"Basically the telecast required one more number because of the way the commercials were paced, so they looked at the piece overall, and they decided there would be a really great moment for a Hanukkah number," Gasteyer explained to EW. "The show didn’t have a Hanukkah number and so they called me up and said, 'Hey listen, we’re thinking about writing a Hanukkah number and we’d like to write it for you, and can we do that?' And I said, 'Why yes, why thank you!'"
According to Deadline, the show also opens with a new song called "Count on Christmas" from songwriting duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (La La Land). It's set to be performed by singer Bebe Rexha.
In A Christmas Story Live! Broderick narrates from behind-the-scenes as an older version of protagonist Ralphie Parker. As fans will recall, the story centers on Ralphie's struggle to evade bullies, and an obsession with his ultimate Christmas gift, a Red Ryder air rifle.
Rudolph plays Ralphie's doting mom while Krakowski portrays Miss Shields, and newcomer Andy Walken is young Ralphie.
Catch A Christmas Story Live! Sunday, Dec. 17 on Fox.
