Did Schumacher announce his retirement a little too early?

I always though Michael would come close to winning 10 Driver's Championships in Formula 1. This retirement announcement came as a rude shock to me. Michael's retirement also means that the driving wheel at Ferrari moves on to the a different class of drivers. It's a bit too early to downplay on these new generation of F1 drivers trying to fit into Michael's shoes.
