Michelle Obama's Inauguration Dress by Isabel Toledo

In a much-anticipated decision, Michelle Obama chose a honey-colored ensemble designed by Isabel Toledo to wear to President Obama's inauguration this morning. The sunny shade was a far cry from what many people predicted, which were blue or red jewel tones that typically dominate the scene of the ceremony.

The dress has been called "optimistic" for its color and lighthearted pattern. The sparkling detail around the neckline attracts attention to her face, and she has added interest to the look by pairing the outfit with a teal pump. It should also be noted that the new First Lady is one of the few women of that title who has been able to pull off yellow in the middle of January.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Mrs. Obama bought the dress and coat special order through Ikram, one of her favorite boutiques. In fact, the owner Ikram Goldman has counseled her before on her wardrobe choices. It was predicted before that she might wear an ensemble created by designer Maria Pinto for the occasion, but Obama's selection isn't exactly surprising. She's worn Toledo before, at a Vogue event last June, and Toledo said in October that she had been contacted by the Obama reps.

But maybe Michelle Obama's decision was motivated by more than just personal style. As Nicole Phelps, Style.com editor said:
"There was talk of [Obama] choosing a bigger-name designer, someone like a Ralph Lauren or an Oscar de la Renta. Her choice of Isabel Toledo shows that she really stands behind the entrepreneurial on-the-rise American designer. It sends a great message to the fashion business, which is struggling like so many American businesses these days." What did fans have to say about the First Lady's inauguration look? The Web site Mrs-O.org is devoted to following (and lauding) Michelle's fashion sense, and they titled the blog entry on this dress: A Beacon of Optimism and Style. Let's hope that's what the next four years will hold.
