Mitch Miller Dead at 99

Mitch Miller, whose hats ran the gamut from TV personality to musician to behind-the-scenes producer, passed away Saturday at 99 years old. According to the New York Daily News, he passed away at Lennox Hill Hospital after suffering from a brief illness.

Miller was best known to the public as the host of the show Sing Along with Mitch, but offscreen he helped shape the development of pop music as an executive at Columbia Records. He as noted (and often criticized) for favoring snappy, upbeat songs instead of higher-quality music -- and he hated rock n' roll.

, an NBC show featuring a chorus singing with popular music of the day, was considered a precursor to modern-day karaoke. Miller is often credited with bringing the tradition to the mainstream.

He received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000.
