Star Trek is stepping into the future by welcoming the first female director in the history of the franchise: Congrats, S.J. Clarkson! While this news may be surprising (Seriously? The first ever?) it's a huge step in the right direction for female filmmakers and an important sign that the industry is changing.

Clarkson has an impressive background — she's known for Jessica JonesOrange is the New Black, Bates Motel, Marvel's The Defenders, and Dexter.

Clarkson's first project will be Star Trek 4, which Paramount announced at CinemaCon, according to Variety. Franchise alums Chris Hemsworth and Zachary Quinto are both committed to the film.

Should everything go according to plan, Clarkson could play a hand in changing the film industry as we know it — especially the sci-fi genre, which is still male-dominated.

Your move, Star Wars.
