First 'Ghost in the Shell' Trailer Shows Scarlett Johansson as Major
The film's first official trailer was released Sunday.
The first official trailer for the crime drama was released on Sunday, quickly amassing more than 1.5 million views. While the decision to cast Scarlett Johansson as Japanese cyborg Major has been drenched in controversy, one look at the trailer proves director Rupert Sanders has ensured the effects are sharp, the shots are stunning, and the action is all there.
Johansson, Sanders, and actor Takeshi Kitano released the trailer during a fan event in Tokyo on Saturday.
Sanders, also known for Snow White and the Huntsman, said the film wasn't meant to be a carbon copy of filmmaker Mamoru Oshii's 1995 animated flick, but was instead a reimagination. He also described it as a "coming of age story" for Major, a crimefighting badass with the body of a robot and the mind of a human being.
Michael Wincott, Michael Pitt, Juliette Binoche, Pilou Asbæk, and Kitano also star alongside Johansson.
Ghost in the Shell hits theaters March 31, 2017.
