Critics are a fickle bunch. They love this. They hate that. It's hard to predict which movies they'll gravitate to in any given year. That said, there are some indicators to look for. Established directors are usually good bets. Actors are less reliable, but certain ones (see: Tom Hanks) are almost always in films worth checking out.

This summer there's a great crop of exciting new quality films just waiting to be seen. We know some will be worthwhile thanks to advance festival screenings. Many films from Sundance, Tribeca, and Cannes will debut over the next few months, and some critics are already in love with them.

Rotten Tomatoes, the criticism aggregator to the masses, can cut into a film's profits with a simple number. If a score is too low, many people will skip the movie altogether. And, on the other hand, if a film is Certified Fresh — 75 percent or higher after 80 (wide release) or 40 (limited release) reviews — it can boost its box office number immensely.
