6 Rising Young Movie Stars You Don't Know Yet, But Will
Look out for these names on the marquee in the coming years.
Chances are you'll already know the biggest stars of 2016 when all's said and done. Tom Hanks is going to play Sully Sullenberger, Andrew Garfield and Liam Neeson will lead the new Martin Scorsese movie, and Mark Wahlberg is in not one, but two biopics based on recent true events. But what about the stars you don't know yet? Every year new fame is found in Hollywood. Here are some of the top candidates to break out and become household names soon:
2016 movies: The Magnificent Seven, The Girl on the Train, Weightless, Untitled Warren Beatty Project, A Kind of Murder, Thank You For Your Service, Hardcore Henry
Yup, Bennett is in seven movies this year and primed for a big career. She's done a lot of independent work but never anything high profile. That changes in 2016. Bennett co-stars in one of the year's biggest remakes (The Magnificent Seven) and in three potential Oscar movies (Girl on the Train, Weightless, and the Untitled Warren Beatty Project). The 28-year-old American actress seems to be a director favorite.
2016 movies: The Birth of a Nation
Parker's is the one face you may recognize. He's been in many films, from The Great Debaters to 2014's Beyond the Lights. But he's done mostly supporting work and is far from well-known. That will change this year when The Birth of a Nation makes its debut October 7. A depiction of the events leading up to Nat Turner's rebellion, Parker's film is a portrait of the antebellum south at the height of slavery. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, the film is a leading Oscar contender already and Parker is the one behind it. The actor co-wrote, directed, and starred in the film.
2016 movies: Sophie's Misfortunes, Altamira, Paterson, Ports of Call
Iranian actress Farahani is on the way up. You may have seen her in Exodus: Gods and Kings in 2014, but the Iranian actress is in line for much bigger things. Next year she'll appear alongside Johnny Depp in the latest Pirates of the Caribbean installment and, this year, she'll work with legend Jim Jarmusch and Kylo Ren himself, Adam Driver, in Paterson among three other small films.
2016 movies: Independence Day: Resurgence, Hot Summer Nights, Bokeh, The Scent of Rain & Lightning, The Tribes of Palos Verdes
Film buffs are already familiar with Ms. Monroe from her fantastic turns in The Guest and last year's best thriller, It Follows. But the public at large still has no idea. Set to become one of the biggest young stars working today, Maika will be busy this year, starting with the blockbuster Independence Day sequel.
2016 movies: Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, The Sense of an Ending
Alwyn, a true unknown, will star as the title character in one of this year's most high-profile book adaptations: Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk. Directed by Ang Lee and co-starring the likes of Steve Martin, Kristen Stewart, Vin Diesel, Garrett Hedlund, and Chris Tucker, the movie has an Oscar pedigree and is based on a beloved novel with a modern wartime theme. Alwyn, a British actor, will get noticed just for being in it. If he's good, this could really be his year.
2016 movies: Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, Little Bitches, New Girl (TV)
Clemons, who starred in one of last year's fan favorites, Dope, is only 22 and a serious talent. She's part of the immensely talented Transparent cast and has appeared on Comedy Bang! Bang! and New Girl as well. Dope was her first major film and she's parlayed good reviews into a role in one of the summer's biggest comedies, Neighbors 2. Her future is very bright.
