Ram won Newport in 2009, the only North American tournament played on grass, and came in hoping that Roddick's shaky play earlier this year could be a sign of weakness.
Roddick, however, put such hopes to rest early on, dominating and simply outclassing Ram 6-3, 6-2, 6-2. Roddick impressed with some subtle and deft net play, an area he's struggled with the in the past, while using his massive serve to keep Ram on his heels for the entire match.
Up next for Roddick? France's Michael Llodra, who should be a tougher opponent. Llodra won the title in Eastbourne last week.
