Matt Damon Jokes About Leonardo DiCaprio's Harrowing 'Revenant' Stories
The Oscar-winning actor pokes fun at his former costar.
It seems like everyone's heard Leonardo DiCaprio talk on and on about how difficult it was to shoot The Revenant. Seriously, Leo's got no chill when it comes to this subject matter. At this point, it's a bit difficult to refrain from all the “Leo is so thirsty for an Oscar” jokes, although his performance in the movie is definitely worthy of the honor.
During the Directors Guild of America Awards, even Matt Damon took a light and friendly jab at his The Departed costar. While introducing iconic filmmaker Ridley Scott, the Oscar-winning actor spoke about the director's dedication to punctuality and discipline. While filming The Martian, Scott insisted that shooting should end at the same time each day.
“Every night at 6 o'clock, the horn blew and Ridley and I went to dinner,” stated Damon. “And that's how you make a movie, and we finished the film really early and we saved 2 million bucks.”
Damon then turned to look at DiCaprio and joked, "And Leo — we weren't cold at all. I'm just sayin'. There's another way to do it."
Both DiCaprio and Alejandro González Iñárritu — the director of The Revenant — laughed at Damon's quip. For months on end, DiCaprio has been discussing the brutal yearlong shoot of The Revenant and how he slept in animal carcasses, endured possible hypothermia, and ate raw bison liver to play frontiersman Hugh Glass. The movie also required a $135 million filming budget. In comparison, The Martian was shot in 70 days and needed a $108 million filming budget. It's not an earth-shattering difference, but actors will be actors.
All jokes aside, DiCaprio is the frontrunner in the Best Actor category this year, and he'll undoubtedly walk away with that coveted golden statue on February 28th.
Until then, we can still poke a little fun at him!
