Salem From Netflix's 'Sabrina the Teenage Witch' Would Like to Say Hello
Unlike the '90s show, Sabrina's feline sidekick will be played by a real cat instead of a puppet.
Salem Saberhagen is in the house.
On Friday, Riverdale creator and Archie Comics chief creative officer, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, revealed the first behind-the-scenes pic of the Netflix series: Meet Salem! Unlike the '90s version, Sabrina's grumpy feline BFF will be played by a real cat — not a puppet. Fans of the original might have mixed feelings about this, but Aguirre-Sacasa's darker, deeper take on Sabrina miiight be tough to pull off with a furry little muffin on set.
"Ladies and gentlemen, meet #Greendale’s latest resident," Aguirre-Sacasa wrote on Twitter. "All hail, Salem! #sabrina, #netflix"
Netflix's Sabrina Spellman will be played by Mad Men star, Kiernan Shipka, while her BFF, Rosalind Walker, will be played by Paper Towns' Jaz Sinclair. In Aguirre-Sacasa's version of the Archie Comics staple, the young witch will channel The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina much more than the sweet, simple Sabrina that Melissa Joan Hart played on ABC's '90s iteration.
As EW describes it, Netflix's Sabrina is "tonally in the vein of Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist" with themes of witchcraft, mischief, and the occult.
So, you know. Just your typical coming-of-age story with a few blood sacrifices thrown in for good measure.
