He died at the age of 57, on May 16, 2010, after a battle with stomach cancer.

He was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, the son of Italian immigrants. As a child, he played the trumpet and French horn.

While he played in such bands as Ronnie Dio and The Prophets, it was when he took over to Ozzy Osbourne that he gained the most fame. The bands released the album Heaven and Hell in 1980, which was very successful. However, disagreements led to Dio and Vinny Appice leaving the band to form their own group, Dio.

He was diagnosed with stomach cancer in 2009, passing away on May 16, 2010.
