Michael Phelps surprised fans and probably even rivals today with a slow start to his Olympic run. The decorated athlete fell to friendly rival Ryan Lochte, coming in fourth in the 400m Individual Medley.

Lochte took the gold with a time of 4.05.18., according to the US Olympic Team Twitter feed. The post read: "Congrats to Ryan Lochte on earning the first GOLD medal for TeamUSA in London! Lochte won the men's 400 IM in 4:05.18"

This morning, Phelps was optimistic about his finals performance. "A final spot is a final spot," Phelps said. "The only thing that matters is getting a spot in. You can't win a gold medal from the morning."

Phelps is two medals away from tying for the most in history and missed out on setting the record for the first athlete to win three consecutive gold medals in the same individual race
