Sam Smith Will Sing the New 'James Bond' Theme
The singer takes on his next musical challenge.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Sam Smith has been officially tapped to sing the latest Bond theme. The song is titled “Writing's on the Wall,” and it will be featured in the franchise's upcoming film, Spectre. Yesterday, Smith teased his involvement with the project by posting a black and white photo of a ring with a small octopus logo on it. In the 007 movies, the members of SPECTRE―a criminal organization―wear insignia rings with a discrete image of an octopus in the center.
“This is one of the highlights of my career. I am honored to finally announce that I will be singing the next Bond theme song,” Smith said in a statement. “I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy and join an incredible line up of some of my biggest musical inspirations. I hope you all enjoy the song as much as I enjoyed making it.”
Smith co-wrote “Writing's on the Wall” with Jimmy Napes, and he is the first British male solo artist to sing the Bond theme since 1965.
Producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli said, “Sam and Jimmy have written the most inspirational song for Spectre and with Sam's extraordinary vocal performance, 'Writing's on the Wall' will surely be considered one of the greatest Bond songs of all time.”
The song will be released on September 25th via Capitol Records, and Spectre will hit theaters on November 6th.
