Watch 3 Super Grim Short Films That Fill in the Gaps for 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes'

Spread of Simian Flu Year 1
Still from Spread of Simian Flu: Before the Dawn of the Apes (Year 1). (From Motherboard)Dawn of the Planet of the Apes hits theaters next Friday, but hardcore fans can get their ape fix early (sort of) in three new shorts produced by Vice media's science and tech offshoot, Motherboard. The three attempt to fill in the gaps between Rise of the PotA and Dawn, which takes place in a ruined world 10 years later, after the Simian Flu has left humanity in tatters.

Just so you know what you're getting into, all three are extra grim, kind of depressing, violent, and none of them full-on shows an ape (which we're guessing would have made the shorts inhibitively expensive). Vice partnered with Fox to make the videos, but we're not sure how close they stick to the canon that Apes director and mastermind Matt Reeves is working from. For all its post-apocalyptic clashing between humans and apes, Dawn doesn't look nearly as terrifying or dire in tone as these shorts.
