Here Are 5 Actresses Who Could Play The Female Indiana Jones

We're casting the role so Steven Spielberg doesn't have to.
In a new interview with The Sun, Spielberg revealed the upcoming fifth installment of Indiana Jones would likely be Harrison Ford's last, but don't expect the character to retire as well. The blockbuster franchise will continue on without Ford, and the director suggested a female incarnation of the titular character is plausible.
Since Spielberg is such a busy man, we decided to lighten his workload with some suggestions of our own. Keep reading to find out our top five picks for who could play Indiana Joan.
1. Anna Kendrick
Although Anna Kendrick won't play Squirrel Girl, she still has a shot at Indiana Joan! Sure, Kendrick is petite, but she's also super scrappy. With some intense physical training, she could transform into a convincing fighter (see: Alicia Vikander deadlifting ancient artifacts in Tomb Raider). It's no secret Kendrick is fluent in sarcasm and gives Hall of Fame-worthy eye rolls. Her cute grumpiness and low tolerance for stupidity only helps her case to be the female version of Indiana Jones. With an Oscar nomination under her belt, it's clear Kendrick has the range to pull this off. (Side note: Kendrick actually starred as "Indianna Jones" in a Red Nose Day parody.)
2. Tessa Thompson
It's easy to imagine Tessa Thompson as a whip cracking, ass-kicking archaeologist with swagger for days. Thompson basically drips cool and is effortlessly swoon-worthy. She already crushed it as Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok, and we are certain she can pull of Indy's fedora and leather jacket with relative ease. Plus, Thompson deserves to be in more stuff, and this is a great opportunity to witness her gloriousness in 3D again.
3. Carrie Coon
For all the haters out there, just remember that Carrie Coon is only 37-years-old. In fact, Harrison Ford was 39 when Raiders of the Lost Ark came out. Rather than investing in an ingenue, let's bank on someone who would be believable as a tenured professor. Unfortunately, most people are oblivious to Coon's talent, although she paid her dues in small-screen cult hits like The Leftovers and Fargo. It's time for Coon to get a taste of mainstream success. She certainly deserves it.
4. Krysten Ritter
If you're wondering whether Krysten Ritter can fight, may we direct you to Jessica Jones? Ritter is disarmingly awesome, and she probably came out of the womb wearing a leather jacket. It wouldn't be a stretch to imagine her as a permanently disgruntled Indiana Joan, but she might need a fake tan! Plus, Ritter's got great comedic timing to nail Indy's one-liners, and she has the physical chops to pull of any action sequence.
5. Aubrey Plaza
For someone who is best known for playing a weirdo on Parks and Recreation, Aubrey Plaza isn't the obvious choice for an action star. Hear us out, though! Plaza is totally believable as a hard-edged geek which sets her apart from the rest of the pack. It's easy to imagine her as a nerdy professor with a book in one hand and a whip in the other. If you watch FX's grievously underrated series Legion, you already know the hidden depth of Plaza's talent. She is the best kind of surprise, and her freshness could breathe new life into the Indiana Jones franchise.
