It's been seven years since Avatar made its grand premiere, changing the lives of sci-fi fans and forever altering the name of the alien game. After the film's insane success, three additional iterations were announced, and Sigourney Weaver says they're not your average sequels.

"In my opinion, the three scripts I’ve read so far are many times more amazing than the first one in terms of their scope," Weaver told Variety in a recent interview. "[Avatar creator James Cameron] did a lot of the heavy lifting in the first movie, establishing the family and the relationships and the world, and now he really gets to play."

Released on December 19, 2009, Avatar grossed over 2.7 billion dollars worldwide. As The Wrap shared in January, Senior Box Office Analyst Jeff Bock believes the movie's massive success was due to its stunning effects.

"Avatar represented a groundbreaking achievement that all but forced people around the globe to go see it," he said. "The 3D in Avatar was something never before seen."

The next installment in the franchise will once again star Sam Worthington as Jake Sully, Zoe Saldana as Neytiri, and Weaver as Grace.

According to Digital Spy, Avatar 2 was originally slated to hit theaters December 2014, the third film in the franchise set to release the following year.

Expect to see it in theaters in 2018.
