Hulu's 'Veronica Mars' Revival May Begin Filming In October
Don't worry, Kristen Bell will remain in 'The Good Place,' too!
News recently started swirling that Kristen Bell and Rob Thomas were in talks to revive Veronica Mars as a limited series at Hulu. As Hulu and Warner Bros. continue to work out details, TVLine reports the revival will start filming in Los Angeles at the end of October and continue through March 2019. The limited series will reportedly span eight episodes.
Though there's yet to be an official confirmation, the revival season may feature a serial killer on the loose in Neptune, which leads Veronica and her father, Keith (Enrico Colantoni, who is rumored to be returning), to take on the investigation. While conducting the case, Veronica and co. will butt heads with the new town Sheriff, per the casting call.
Reps from Hulu have declined to comment on the series.
For those unfamiliar, the original Veronica Mars series (2004-2007) followed a high school student who trained to be a private investigator under the tutelage of her father. Each episode of the first two seasons followed Veronica as she worked to solve a mystery. Meanwhile, she dealt with a bigger season-long mystery that was much more complex. However, Season 3 focused more on smaller mysteries over the course of a few episodes.
After the show was canceled by The CW, creator Thomas wrote a feature film based on the series that never saw the light of day — until 2013, when Bell and Thomas launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the project. Within 11 hours, the $2 million goal was reached and the film was released on March 14, 2014.
About two years ago, Bell confirmed she and Thomas were "definitely striving to do it again. And this time around, we’re not going to ask the audience to pony up for anything."
Though the deal with Hulu is for one revival season, there's certainly potential for it to continue. HBO's Big Little Lies (starring Reese Witherspoon) was also supposed to be a limited series, yet the cast is currently filming Season 2.
Fans are clearly in love with Veronica and are willing to dig their claws into whatever new mystery she discovers. Unless this revival season bombs, it's safe to say viewers can expect another season (fingers crossed, though).
Fans of The Good Place, never fear! The NBC series isn't going anywhere. In fact, Bell reportedly made sure she could film both series before signing on for the revival. The selfish yet lovable Eleanor Shellstrop will continue to create mayhem in the good/bad (?) place.
2019 is going to be a busy year for the actress. Aside from her stint on Veronica Mars, Season 3 of The Good Place will air (she'll also likely film Season 4), Frozen 2 will hit theaters, and she'll voice her Frozen character, Anna, in upcoming video game, Kingdom Hearts III.
Thomas has worked on several other notable projects, including The CW's current zombie series, iZombie, and the revival 90210 series, which aired on The CW from 2008-2013. He's also written Veronica Mars novels.
