Remember When Ryan Reynolds Almost Married Alanis Morissette?

Bauer GriffinA lot of big things happened in 2002: Halle Berry won an Oscar, Barry Bonds shattered the home run record, Justin and Britney called it quits, and Ryan Reynolds started dating Alanis Morissette. Van Wilder has married a lot of high-profile women since then, but his first big Hollywood romance was with the (seemingly) angry rocker.

Background:
Maybe it was the Canadian connection that brought these two together, or perhaps they had too much to drink at Drew Barrymore's birthday party back in 2002. Either way, they met at that party and hit it off. And even got engaged two years later.

Around the time he popped the question in the summer of 2004, she was gearing up to tour for the 10th anniversary of her Jagged Little Pill album. That means the album is almost 20. Feeling old yet?

In June 2005, Morissette raved about her husband-to-be in her own wacky way: "He's just such a supportive creature. I feel so loved by him, in a trampoline kind of way. He's always very happy for me."

The End:

These two never made it down the aisle. In fact, they hadn't even set a wedding date when they split in February 2007. The news of their split was confirmed in a joint (highly predictable) statement by their reps. "Ryan Reynolds and Alanis Morissette have mutually decided to end their engagement. They remain close friends and continue to have the utmost love and admiration for each other. They ask that their privacy be respected surrounding this personal matter." (This was likely code for: "Things are terrible. They probably won't ever talk again and they're certainly not friends.")

Anyway, it was only a matter of months before Reynolds got involved with Scarlett Johansson and those two did exchange vows in September 2008.

Morissette later confirmed that her album Flavors of Entanglement was about their breakup and "Torch" was written for her ex.

Chances of Reconciliation? Not in a million years.

First of all, when's the last time you heard anything about Alanis Morissette? She got married and had a baby a few years ago and seems to be enjoying family life away from the spotlight.

As for Reynolds, he and Johansson split in late 2010. He then went and shocked the world by marrying Blake Lively in September 2012 without ever announcing their engagement. Now we're just waiting for surprise baby news on that front. We'd like to say he and Morissette would at least be cordial if they did randomly run into each other on the red carpet, but the sparks have got to be long gone.
