First Trailer for 'Magnificent Seven' Remake Brings Us a Multicultural Hero Squad
Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt head up the new crew.
As far as Westerns go, The Magnificent Seven is a sacred document of classic cinematic masculinity and righteousness. Now it's getting a remake from director Antoine Fuqua that doesn't look like it wipes its dirty boots all over the first movie's history while also bringing a fresh take to the well-worn tale, and for now we're cautiously optimistic that this could be a worthwhile modern Western.
Led by Denzel Washington and backed up by Chris Pratt, this update's cast is decidedly more multicultural than its predecessor, with Korean-born Byung-hun Lee, and Martin Sensmeier, of Native Alaskan heritage, joining the titular team. That this movie won't repeat the original's mistake of casting white actors to play characters of color (such as Eli Wallach playing villain Calvera), gives us hope. Maybe some Hollywood productions really are serious about combating the rampant whitewashing we've seen in movies like Gods of Egypt, Exodus: Gods and Kings, and Scarlett Johansson's role in the upcoming Ghost in the Shell adaptation.
