New 'Macbeth' & 'Danish Girl' Trailers Preview Oscar Season
Names to remember for next year's Academy Awards: Fassbender, Cotillard, Redmayne, Vikander.
As Summer draws to a close (*sniff*), take solace in the fact the best movies of the year are about to hit theaters every weekend. Two of them just released new trailers and the footage does nothing to dispel the notion both Macbeth and The Danish Girl will likely be Oscar nominated.
William Shakespeare's Macbeth, adapted for the screen for the billionth time, may have found its darkest usher yet in Australian director Justin Kurzel. The trailer below previews Kurzel's vision. Every shot is carefully orchestrated with artistic intent. And every actor's movement is a subtle dance for the camera. If you've seen his debut film, Snowtown, you know Kurzel has a feel for both extreme violence and authenticity. As the trailer shows, this is not just another Shakespearean adaptation. Look for Oscar buzz to surround Kurzel and both of his stars, Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard.
Likewise, expect the Academy to favor The Danish Girl. The film appears to be prime Oscar bait as well considering the talent involved: Tom Hooper (The King's Speech) directs, and Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything) and Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina) star alongside Matthias Schoenaerts, Amber Heard, and Ben Whishaw. The film centers around Lili Elbe (Redmayne) who was one of the first recipients of sexual reassignment surgery. Her story is romantic, brave, and utterly dangerous. Redmayne certainly looks the part and, if the trailer is any indication, he may be in the running for Best Actor again after winning last year for Theory. Decide for yourself:
