What The Actors From Your Favorite Survival Movies Endured For Their Intense Roles

6. Viggo Mortensen In 'The Road'
To capture the bleakness of a post-apocalyptic United States, The Road was filmed during wintertime in Pennsylvania, with its lead Viggo Mortensen losing nearly 30 pounds for the film. Even between the frigid temperatures and the low-calorie diet, the actor insists his character was more emotionally draining, than physically.

"We were tired and worn out and we really were freezing," Mortensen told Mother Jones. "I couldn’t very well show up looking extremely well fed. Kodi (his co-star) was lucky because he’s just naturally a scrawny kid. But that was the least of it, really. It was much harder to go on this emotional challenge together."
