Zendaya Just Shut Down the Most Disgusting Rape Joke in the Best Way
The internet is a dark place, but women like Zendaya are lighting the way.
When one Twitter user posted a rape joke so distasteful we nearly lost all faith on the spot, they probably didn't expect a direct response from one of its victims. But actress Zendaya Coleman isn't the type to shove acts like these under the rug.
"If the purge was real who ya'll raping?" the user wrote alongside a cropped picture of Beyonce, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, and Zendaya herself.
As if a question like this would ever, ever be acceptable. As if it was a perfectly normal thing to ask 12,000 people who they'd prefer to attack and terrorize if there was no legal ramification.
And to make matters worse, of those 12,000 people, nearly 150 retweeted it.
Misogynists are everywhere, and the internet's anonymity seems to provide them a false feeling of safety — that is, until they're called out.
"This is absolutely disgusting and you should be ashamed of yourself. Is this really what my generation thinks is ok?" Zendaya responded, prompting more than 35,000 retweets and nearly 50,000 likes.
...to which the joker expressed his excitement...
...prompting Zendaya to retort with...
...and this misguided person to say...
Since then, however, the original tweets have been deleted, a public apology left in their place:
In truth, this individual likely wouldn't have recanted his atrocious joke if it hadn't been for 19-year-old Zendaya.
19-year-old Zendaya Coleman.
