Candace Cameron Bure Dishes on D.J.'s Dating Skills and How She's a 'Much Hipper' Parent Than Danny

The 'Fuller House' star told us all about D.J.'s struggles as a single mom, her romantic pursuits, and her parenting style.

The Internet practically imploded when Netflix announced a Full House spin-off last year. With next week's premiere of Fuller House, fans will officially welcome the Tanners back into their lives. Although some things have changed dramatically in the sequel series, you can undoubtedly expect nostalgia to reign supreme.

The new show follows a recently widowed D.J. (Candace Cameron Bure) and her struggles to raise three sons as a single mom. Stephanie (Jodie Sweetin) and Kimmy (Andrea Barber), along with Kimmy's daughter Ramona, offer their services by moving in with D.J. because it's the right thing to do, obviously.

If the plot sounds eerily familiar, that's no accident. When it comes down to it, both Full House and Fuller House have the same message at their core: It's all about family because that's where the heart truly lies.

Cameron Bure recently chatted with us about D.J.'s transition from married life to a single mom and how she's a much "cooler" and more modern parent than Danny ever was. The charming actress even dished about how John Stamos helped the original cast maintain their ageless beauty. Now that's real love.

What problems does D.J. face as a single parent that are different from the ones that Danny faced?

Times are just different now — like just the fact that we have social media, cell phones, and access to the world for kids is so much greater than when we were kids. That comes into play a lot within the show. I also want to say — without sounding like a total dork — that Danny was a little bit of a geek, and I think D.J.'s a much hipper, cooler mom than Danny was a dad. So I think that with dating, she has more options, but that might [make it] more difficult. [She's] trying to be a single mom and raise three kids, but [also] make responsible choices about whether or not she wants to date, or who she's going to date. D.J. has some very attractive options out there.

Can you explain how D.J. is "cooler" than Danny?

Well, Danny was like the cleaning machine and hugging machine and kind of a geeky dancer. He always had the corny jokes. Even though D.J. actually took on quite a few traits of her dad, she is a much cooler mom — even in the way she dresses and keeping up with the lingo... I wouldn't say that D.J. was always the popular girl in school, but she was always level-headed and had good friends. As an adult, she's the same way. She's part of the “in” crown, but is not necessarily the coolest.

How strong is adult D.J.'s dating game?

I think it's actually pretty strong. I think she's going to surprise you.

Val Chmerkovsky and Maks Chmerkovsky from Dancing with the Stars are going to be on Fuller House. Could you give us some insight about their characters and if you're going to show off any dance skills you learned on DWTS?

Well, it would be a shame to have those boys on the show and not try to show off some skills I learned while being on [DWTS]. I can't go into too much detail, but they're playing brothers on the show, and let's just say we're having a very fun girl's night out if we run into those two.

Everyone's been super concerned about D.J. and Steve. Will they finally get their happily ever after?

I can't share very much other than that he's definitely back on the show and makes a few appearances. So he's on more than once. You're definitely going to see them explore their friendship — and maybe a relationship.

Who's a stricter mom: D.J. or you?

I think I'm a stricter mom; I think D.J.'s a more cautious mom.

Care to elaborate?

I'm pretty hard-lined with the rules. My husband and I are in terms of what we expect of our kids. D.J.'s a single mom, so there's probably more leniency than I have because she has to be both mom and dad... Whereas I have my husband who is a partner, so we get to back each other up when we have to make tough decisions. But D.J., as a single mom, is overly cautious about safety and that kind of stuff. Maybe because my kids are a little older, too. Once you've experienced some of those things, you're like, “No big deal. A little bit of blood doesn't hurt. Brush it off.”

“Oh, mylanta” is D.J.'s catchphrase. Will we hear any fresh ones from the new characters?

Yeah, you will. You'll definitely hear some of the originals, but the new kids have their own catchphrases and new things that I'm sure will stick with lots of kids out there.

Do Kimmy and Stephanie still have a hilarious love-hate relationship?

You know, they still have that love-hate relationship. They've never been enemies, but they annoy one another. Since we're all under one roof, there are times when they take advantage of their friendship if they think D.J. needs to loosen up or not be so strict about something. They end up teaming up at times if it benefits them. Because of that long-lost history, I think their love-hate relationship is a little bit tongue-and-cheek at this point. Obviously they really love each other, but it wouldn't be fun if they didn't kind of pretend to hate each other.

Is the dog in the promos a descendant of Comet?

You know, the Tanner family has been a fan of the golden retriever for many years, so they have a new one... It's definitely a new dog, but there may be lineage to the original Comet.

Which cast member were you the most excited to reunite with?

Honestly, Scott Weinger. Not so much because we haven't stayed in touch, because we have — but because Scott's been out of the industry as an actor. Scott's a writer and a producer, and a successful one, too. When he came back to play Steve, it was so new for him because he hadn't acted in so many years, and he's just an adorable person in real life.

Apart from you, Stephanie, and Kimmy, how much can we expect to see of the original cast?

Everyone drops by from the original cast, aside from the Olsen twins. The original cast is not in every episode because this is a new show about these new kids. It's about D.J., Stephanie, and Kimmy raising these four kids, so that's what this new show is about. All of the rest of the original cast members hop in and out throughout the season.

How will Fuller House deal with the absence of Michelle Tanner? Is there a possibility of seeing the character on the show again?

I have no idea. I know the door is always open if they ever decided that one of them wanted to make an appearance on the show, but they're not focusing on that. We make references to them on the show, so it's not like she's a family member who isn't there anymore. She's absolutely there. We talk about her, but she's just not present.

You guys are all incredibly good looking and still look so young. What's your secret?

I will say that we all just took the John Stamos magic potion. I don't know what it is, but we all just drank the same thing and got it from him.

Fuller House will premiere on February 26th on Netflix. Will you be tuning in?

I'm the TV Editor at Zimbio. My interests include books, pop culture, and Colin Firth.
